Activities for Kids… of All Ages!
Below are some great activities to help introduce children to native plants of Ohio. If you know of other activities we should consider adding to our website, please use the “Contact Us” page to let us know!
1) Go Native Ohio: Native Plant Game Cards
These special cards were designed by members of The Little Garden Club of Columbus as a way to help children learn about native plants. The photographs were taken by Ohio professional wildlife photographer, Jim McCormac. The “Go Native Ohio, A Wildflower Card Game” cards measure about 3 by 5 inches, with 13 different flower images and 4 of each flower (52 cards).
Go Native Ohio, A Wildflower Card Game
Each card has a picture of an Ohio native wildflower, the common name, and the botanical name. Note: These cards do NOT have traditional suit markings. They are intended for games of “Fish” or other concentration games with children… and adults can play with them to brush up on common and botanical nomenclature.
These cards can be ordered directly from The Little Garden Club of Columbus club members by downloading and completing the order from, and mailing it along with a check made out to The Little Garden Club of Columbus for $20 per deck. These are high-quality, glossy cards, that come in a beautiful cardboard box… great for gifts!
2) Ohio Wildflower Coloring Pages from the ODNR
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, have created a wonderful set of coloring pages for children entitled, “ Ohio’s Spring Wildflower Activity Book.” The booklet contains 10 illustrations designed by Ryan Moss that show the outline of an Ohio wildflower, information about the plant, and a word scramble at the bottom of the page for the plant’s common name. 3) Ohio Native Plants of Distinction: Matching Game!
In 2022 we launched a new initiative called Ohio Native Plants of Distinction. Each year we will be featuring 4-5 great Ohio native plants. We hope that you will learn all the fun facts about these plants, and plant as many as possible this year. We have taken the information about these great 4 plants and created a Matching Game! On the left side of the page are the 4 native plants we are featuring in 2022, and to the right are lots of fun facts about these plants. How well do you know these plants?
